No doubt that data is becoming more visual and with the $590M purchase of Pure Digital, makers of the pocket Flip camera, Cisco has bought into future of pocket video recorders as networking tools. The Flip line of cameras are no doubt great to have around for capturing spontaneous moments, but are many non-tech enthusiasts likely to use a dedicated video capture device like this on a regular basis? It’s possible that Cisco recognizes the potential data sharing capabilities a device like this could bring to an enterprise, for example, the ability to amass a collection of user-created videos as a knowledge base. As corporations become more virtual, these cameras act as a means to document remotely, the footage captured by an agent on-location, then transferred to the project sponsor over the web. It will be interesting to see what Cisco does with this line and how the public receives these kinds of devices going forward.
